The "Kitchen Table" Approach to Getting Your Website off the Ground

For many counsellors and therapists, the word "marketing" feels cold, clinical, or even slightly unethical. It conjures up images of aggressive sales tactics that feel entirely at odds with the empathy and stillness of the therapeutic space. If you feel a sense of dread at the thought of building a website, you are not alone. However, I want to offer you a different perspective: your digital presence is actually an act of service, not a sales pitch.
Reframing the Digital Space
Think of your website as a digital version of your counselling room. Before a client ever sits in your chair, they are likely looking for a sign that they will be safe, heard, and understood. When you create a simple, honest website, you are extending the "holding space" you provide in person out into the digital world. You are helping a person in distress find the support they need.
You Do Not Need to Be a Tech Genius
There is a common myth that you need to master complex software or understand "the algorithm" to be successful online. In reality, your clients aren't looking for flashy animations or high-tech features. They are looking for you.
To get started, you only need three simple pages:
The Home Page: A warm welcome that acknowledges why the visitor might be there and offers a sense of hope.
The About Page: A place to show your face and share how you can support them, helping the client feel a sense of rapport before you even meet.
The Contact Page: A clear, simple way for them to reach out, whether by email or a brief phone call.
Keeping it Simple
If you can sit at your kitchen table and explain to a friend how you help people, you already have all the skills you need to create your content. Use plain, jargon-free language. Speak from the heart.
By stripping away the technical noise, you can focus on what truly matters: making it as easy as possible for a person in need to find your door and knock. Marketing is not about shouting for attention: it is about quietly lighting a lamp so that those in the dark can find their way to you.
